PHNX Development Forms Alliance with Mercury Insurance to Make Homes in High Fire Risk Areas Insurable
Company executives join fire professionals and community leaders to celebrate construction milestone at PHNX Development’s first wildfire-safe home in Northern California
GROVELAND, Calif. – PHNX Development, pioneer of the nation’s first Type 1A noncombustible single-family home, announced today an alliance with Mercury Insurance to forge a path to making homes in high fire-risk areas insurable. The companies celebrated the announcement yesterday during a key construction milestone – installation of the home’s roof beams – for the company’s newest wildfire-safe home under construction on Pine Mountain Lake near Yosemite National Park.
“We could not think of a more appropriate venue to announce our new alliance with Mercury Insurance, as we install the roof beams of our latest PHNX noncombustible home,” said Laurie Fisher, founder of PHNX Development. “This stage is particularly symbolic because our patent-pending PHNX Longspan™ roof and floor framing system is what makes Type 1A construction financially feasible for single-family homes.”
Type 1A is typically used exclusively with high-rise structures and is truly noncombustible and wildfire-safe. There is no wood and no roof vents, so there is nothing to ignite—a PHNX Home structure is simply concrete and steel. A PHNX Home is not only resistant to fire, but also wind, water, rot and pests—the ultimate in climate resilience.
“We knew that insurance companies would be really excited about this opportunity to reduce their risk and be able to offer more home policies with confidence—even in high fire-risk areas,” said Fisher. “We are honored to have Mercury Insurance be the first to offer a seat at their table.”
Mercury Insurance executives joined PHNX for a roof-topping ceremony, where a ceremonial beam, signed by event participants, was placed at the highest point of the roof structure.
"One of our core values is ‘Do the Right Thing,’ and we believe working with a company like PHNX that’s looking for creative solutions to difficult problems is the right thing to do,” said Victor Joseph, President and Chief Operating Officer, Mercury Insurance. "We want to continue to grow our homeowners book in California, but we also want to help the industry rethink the way we approach catastrophe-prone areas so we can all insure more homes.”
In the past several weeks, Mercury Insurance bound its first PHNX Home policy on PHNX1, the company’s flagship Type 1A noncombustible home in Santa Clarita.
"We are actively looking for ways to say ‘yes’ to California homeowners,” said Kelly Butler, Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer for Mercury Insurance. “Our alliance with PHNX Development is a great example of Mercury’s desire to continually explore new and innovative ways to help protect California homeowners from wildfires, which will create more opportunities to provide coverage in wildfire-prone areas.”
