Building with confidence: bringing Type 1A construction to single-family homes

At PHNX, we’re passionate about Type 1A construction, and here’s why that's exciting: PHNX is the first company to crack the code for making Type 1A construction financially feasible for single-family homes. Our proprietary Longspan™ system, a wood-free, patent-pending framing solution, spans up to 32 feet with up to 8-foot spacing. With 2-hour fire-rated floors and 1-½ hour fire rated roof , Longspan™ lets us bring non-combustible, wildfire-proof Type 1A construction to homes—something that’s never been done before.

This video demonstrates our roof assembly process.

What is Type 1A construction?

Type 1A construction is widely used in high-rise and large commercial buildings, where fire resistance is paramount. Using non-combustible materials like concrete and steel, Type 1A construction provides long-lasting durability under high heat, making buildings significantly safer in a fire. While most single-family homes are built with wood, which burns easily, PHNX has pioneered a way to apply the safety of Type 1A construction to residential homes affordably.

Bringing Type 1A safety standards to homes

PHNX adapted the high safety standards of Type 1A construction for residential use, innovating to make this method practical for homeowners. Our approach includes insulated concrete forms (ICFs) for exterior walls, providing a fire-resistant, durable shell for the home. We partner with Fox Blocks for ICFs, which offer a 4-hour fire rating—exceeding Type 1A requirements.

Inside, we use light-gauge steel for interior walls, allowing for flexible, non-load-bearing partitions. Unlike traditional wood-framed walls, these steel partitions are easily moved, adding versatility for future remodels.

Innovative wood-free floors and roofs

Replacing wood in floors and roofs was a challenge, but PHNX developed a wood-free solution that meets Type 1A standards. For floors, we pair steel beams with lightweight concrete decking, reinforced with fiberglass strands, creating a fire-resistant structure without excessive weight. For roofs, our Longspan™ beams and insulated metal panels offer high durability, fire resistance, and the structural integrity to allow spacious, open interiors.

Safety meets cost efficiency

While concrete and steel typically cost more than wood, PHNX’s Longspan™ system reduces overall materials and labor costs by spanning longer distances with fewer supports. Plus, with fire-resistant design built in, you may save on additional fire-prevention features, making this a cost-effective way to enhance your home’s safety.

The result: safe, resilient homes built to last

A PHNX home delivers unmatched safety, durability, and practicality by bringing the strength of Type 1A construction to residential living. Whether it’s wildfire safety or long-term resilience you’re after, Type 1A construction is now within reach. Understanding how your home is built—and why—gives you confidence in your investment for a sustainable future.
